An abstract animated science-fiction film that takes the experiences shared by humans and electronic circuits as its starting point. Our computing technology emerged during the Cold War as a byproduct of the development of atomic weapons and their associated planetary surveillance systems. In 1961, at what was perhaps the coldest point of this period, Edward Lorenz and Yoshisuke Ueda independently discovered deterministic chaos in their computers. In film #59, humans, aliens and electronic devices vacillate between these poles of a human fever dream of planetary control on the one hand, and lively machinic chaos on the other.  
All images in the film were produced as analog electronic signals, in a re-enactment of antiquated ways of computing. These signals were generated using period equipment, including an analog computer from 1963, early sonar and radar oscillators, and bits from military flight simulators. This film is an attempt to liberate these technologies from their problematic origins.  
Narrative elements derived from Cold War era science fiction films set the tone, while references to radar and television scanning result in images that evoke very early computer graphics. These progressively unfold into organic calligraphies, in which the negative space between the patterns becomes one of the protagonists. Resemblances with manmade phenomena are gradually left behind, and the film evolves into a nonverbal meditation on material processes, human perception and the arrow of time.

Much of Joost Rekveld's work finds its inspiration in media history and the history of science. When considered as cultural phenomena and disconnected from notions of progress, these histories are a rich repository of ideas, many of them wrongly neglected and interesting to revisit. This work - and the longer film it is part of - are outcomes of Rekveld's long-running investigation into the practice and utopian ideas around analog computing. Its point of departure is a re-enactment of a concrete event: the discovery of deterministic chaos by Yoshisuke Ueda when working with the analog computer at Kyoto University on November 27, 1961.  
There are several origin stories of chaos theory, and the most well known is undoubtedly the story of Edward Lorenz and his digital calculator. Around the same time as Ueda, Lorenz discovered that a very small rounding error in his data resulted in large-scale divergence of the outcome of the weather model he was calculating. Years later this phenomenon became generally known as 'The Butterfly Effect'.  
Ueda's discovery was also made in collaboration with a calculating device, in this case an electronic analog computer constructed by a fellow doctoral student a few years his senior. When plotting the curves produced by a system of equations, Ueda noticed an irregularity, similar in shape to a 'shattered egg', that could not be accounted for by any malfunction or known mathematical explanation. Due to the hierarchical relations in the lab, Ueda's discovery was dismissed by his superiors for many years and it did not get published until the early 1970's, at the time of the student's protests in Japan.

The left machine traces the field: the Comdyna analog computer at the back drives the X-axis  and adjusts the Y-axis so that the probe follows an equipotential line. The right machine copies the movement because it is driven with the same XY voltages and draws the lines on paper.

This use of resistive paper to model all kinds of field equations was invented in the 1920s and was very common until well into the 1960s and 1970s. Just after the second world war it was used extensively for modelling air flows around supersonic planes and rockets. Later it was used to model electron trajectories in tubes, accelerators and in the first integrated circuits. In the Netherlands it was used for modelling water flows through dikes.  
It is an almost forgotten technique that is very elegant and simple: it can be done by hand with hardly any tools and it can be used without understanding any of the math involved. As a  tribute to'Reminiscence' and 'Telc' by Steina and Woody Vasulka, this analog HD video work is guided by the concept of 'reafference', a term that refers to the perceptual changes that occur when we move our body. In #67, we take a stroll through the electromagnetic worlds of machines and humans, structured by the fundamental frequency of power lines and the analog video signal.

The TR-48 is not really designed for these speeds, so the calculation and parameter values are less precise than usual, due to the difference in frequency response of the various modules. The clip ends with an amplifier overload for that reason.

The installation constisted of four stereoscopic video viewers, each containing a visualization of the data picked up by an electrostatic sensor during a walk in and around the location in question.
